People are most often stung when they step on a velvet ant while barefoot. ![]() Although the wasps look cuddly, don’t pick one up. What does a fire ant look like A fire ant red-tinged insect. Rarely, the venom causes a life-threatening reaction. The bites are painful, itchy and usually on your legs and feet. On rare occasions, a velvet ant may wander into a home during the summer months. What are fire ant bites A fire ant bite occurs when a particular type of aggressive, venomous ant stings your skin. But you may find a number of velvet ants where there have been large colonies of ground-nesting bees. They’re solitary wasps and do not live in colonies. ![]() You usually only see one velvet ant at a time. Some species are thought to dig nests in soil and provision them with insects for their larvae, while others reportedly prey on honey bees. Her larvae then feed on the pupae of those bees or wasps. They’re generally considered to be beneficial because the female lays her eggs in the nests of ground-nesting bees and wasps. They’re found outdoors, mostly in dry, open sandy areas (the same areas where you find ground bees) where they run erratically on the ground. Velvet ants are most common in southern and western states, but they do occasionally occur in our Northeast area. Adults can be fairly large, up to 7/8 inch long. They’re similar in coloration and fuzziness to wooly bear caterpillars but pack a lot more wallop if handled. Velvet ants are usually a combination of orange, red and black hairs in bands. Commonly referred to as the red velvet ant or cow killer ant, the velvet ant is actually a solitary wasp. The female velvet ant attracts attention, especially from kids, because she is colorful and fuzzy. The male velvet ant has wings, is rarely seen, and doesn’t sting. The velvet ant is shaped like an ant but is really a wingless female wasp. The velvet ant is sometimes called the “cow killer” because it was thought its sting could kill a cow! The sting can’t kill a cow or a human, and it’s not poisonous, but it sure hurts like heck. Only female red velvet ants can sting, and the venom is only mildly toxic to cows but much more painful to humans. Like other wasps, it has a stinger and can inflict a painful sting. The common name for red velvet ants is cow killer ants, so named because their sting is painful enough that it might kill a cow though, of course, it won’t. Why shouldn’t you touch a velvet ant? Because, despite its name, it’s not an ant at all, it’s a wasp. The adult ‘cow killer wasp’ feeds on nectar and is attracted by flowers and plants.Don’t Touch the Velvet Ant! The female ‘velvet ant’ is wingless, unlike the male, and only the female is armed with an inch-long stinger, which serves as egg-laying organ, called the ovipositor. ![]() For everyone’s relief, this amazing creature was not aggressive and nobody got hurt as we had to cover our eyes when watching the agonising video of Coyote Peterson, a brave lad who didn’t mind getting stung by the ‘cute’ wasp in the name of science. She thought it is the most unusual ant she had ever seen and we cannot blame her. Unfortunately, she could not take an image of the wasp, but the sighting was very real, judging by the detailed description provided. We are very excited as the most recent sighting of the wasp has been reported by one of our website users! Being unable to identify the female wasp, which was crawling undisturbed in the garden of her residential property in Waterloo, Liverpool. ![]()
